ACT is a service-delivery model that provides comprehensive, locally based treatment to people with serious and persistent mental illnesses. The program provides service recipients with multidisciplinary, round-the-clock staffing of a psychiatric unit, but within the comfort of their own home and community. ACT team members are trained in the areas of psychiatry, social work, nursing, substance abuse, and vocational rehabilitation.

Summary: This position is responsible for acting as a peer support to clients in recovery. The Peer Supporter is an individual with a direct lived experience of a mental health and/or substance use disorder who are in recovery. In Ohio, the definition of recovery is: The personal process of change in which Ohio residents strive to improve their health and wellness, resiliency, and reach their full potential through self-directed actions.

Essential Functions: Acts as a role model to persons with a mental health or co-occurring mental health and substance used disorder in order to facilitate recovery by using variety of techniques (e.g., sharing personal recovery story [when appropriate] with persons, coordinating & facilitating recovery related groups, teaching relaxation strategies, facilitating supportive intervention); instructs persons about services provided to aid in recovery (e.g., availability of peer services, advanced directives, living will opportunities, clients rights process); mentors persons with a mental illness or co-occurring mental health or substance use disorder & others in the recovery process (e.g., reassures persons to the reality of recovery, assists with increasing personal empowerment, helps persons set & achieve goals); provides information & assists persons with applying for supplemental programs (e.g., Residential State Supplement Program, Recovery Requires a Community, etc.); assists persons with completing forms; develops services & supports to identify service & support gaps for individuals with mental health or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders; participates on treatment teams with person’s consent; collaborates to assist with intake/discharge planning (e.g., conducts intake & discharge surveys, facilitates exit interviews); monitors person’s satisfaction. Acts as a liaison between persons & staff: relays information to medical doctors/clinicians, Client’s Rights Officer, other staff with need to know to aid in problem solving; coordinates responses to inquiries, as appropriate, to state & local partners; conducts presentations & offers technical assistance to all stakeholders including but not limited to Medicaid, board Associations, provider associations, County Boards of Mental Health, guardians & family members. Participates on committees; participates on OhioMHAS Certified Peer Recovery Supporter technical assistance calls; provides staff intern/patient training on peer service delivery. Documents information as directed by supervisor.

Requirements:

General Requirements: Must adhere to the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board’s Chemical Dependency Code of Ethics, demonstrate an understanding of addiction as an illness, and have three years of treatment or recovery experience. If in recovery, must have at least one year of continuous sobriety. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to effectively work with Agency employees, outside contacts, and a diverse client population.

Certification Requirements: Must be certified as a Peer Recovery Supporter.

Amount of Travel: Minimal, mostly confined to local travel.

Pay Range: $16.00-$19.50 per hour.

Placement on the range is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Working Conditions: Professional office environment; exposure to computer screens; work closely with others; sitting for prolonged periods of time; may be required to stand, stoop, push, pull, bend, and lift and move light objects, such as records and boxes; manual dexterity required. Maintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding work and have regular attendance. The employee is expected to adhere to all agency policies and procedures.
