Title: Industrial Designer - BCycle Product Team

Reports to: Product Engineering Manager

Location: Madison, WI

Job Type: Full-time, Monday through Thursday 8:30am to 5pm, Hybrid, Exempt, 32 hours per week

BCycle aims to change the world, community by community, by developing the bike share systems that are getting more people on bikes. A subsidiary of Bicycle Transit Systems, BCycle develops and delivers the bikes, stations, and software that power bike share systems across the US. Our products are designed to be engaging, intuitive, sustainable, and robust for people who want to go places by bike, whether they are riding for fun, exercise, or transportation. We also build our products to last, based on the goal that bike share, biking, and sustainable transportation become established features of the communities where we work.  

BCycle’s Product Engineering Team is committed to bringing new and innovative products to shared micromobility. We are looking for a passionate Industrial Designer to join our fun and inspiring work environment. In this role, you will be responsible for bringing creative vision, user empathy, and strong design execution to our product development efforts. This role will be central to shaping how our products look, feel, and function for riders across North America.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead concept development for new products, from early sketches to refined designs.
  • Translate user needs, brand identity, and business goals into compelling design solutions.
  • Create 2D/3D visualizations and prototypes (hand sketches, CAD, renderings, physical mockups) to communicate ideas.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers to ensure designs are both desirable and manufacturable.
  • Capture the voice of the customer and incorporate it into design and development, ensuring products are intuitive and aligned with real-world needs
  • Drive usability and ergonomics, making sure products are intuitive and comfortable to use.
  • Partner with the Product Manager to align design direction with roadmap priorities.
  • Plan and conduct interviews, observations, and field studies to uncover user needs and pain points.
  • Research trends in mobility, consumer products, and sustainability to keep our products ahead of the curve.
  • Support design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and work with suppliers on materials, finishes, and production details.
  • Lead or participate in formative and summative user testing, synthesizing insights to improve design and experience.
  • Advocate for sustainability and user-centered design throughout the product lifecycle.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial design or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • 8+ years of professional experience in product design (transportation, consumer electronics, or related industries preferred).
  • Strong portfolio showcasing concept development, CMF, ergonomics, and brand-aligned design execution.
  • Proficiency in CAD and visualization tools (SolidWorks, Rhino, KeyShot, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar).
  • Experience building physical prototypes (3D printing, foam models, rapid prototyping).
  • Strong collaboration skills — able to work with engineers, product managers, and external partners.
  • Passion for mobility, cycling, or sustainable design is a plus.

  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Occasional repetitive motions involving wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Clear verbal communication required for phone and video conferencing.
  • Regular, punctual attendance in accordance with company policy.
  • Full-time role (32 hours/week, 4 days at 8 hours per day), with occasional evening or weekend hours as needed.
